What the Hell is sqmdata00.sqm?

Windows Live Messenger

Today I just realized that there are many sqmdata00.sqm files in my computer. So, I search through the internet and found out that this file was generated by Windows Live Messenger. The sqm files stand for "Service Quality Monitoring". This file will generate from feature "participate in the quality improvement program".

There was some bugs of Windows Live Messenger (8.1build 178) that it always generate *sqm file all the time even you disable this feature. So, I collect useful information for you from the internet.

I established via a previous post that *.sqm files were being generated by Messenger, however these files are being created in my root directory every time that someone uses Messenger. If I do nothing, I'll end up with my root directory choked with files that don't seem to be used again once they've been created.

There was a bug in an earlier beta version that caused these files to be written to the root. If you install the latest version of Messenger (8.1 build 178) you should see this issue resolved. You can install from http://get.live.com/messenger/overview.

The sqm files stand for "Service Quality Monitoring" hence I found several posts claiming that you could stop the files from being generated entirely by disabling the option in Messenger to participate in the quality improvement program. (Tools/Options/General). However... that option was disabled by default on my system and I made sure it did not enable itself after signing in, but the sqm files are still there on my system, although they are in the Docs/Settings location as opposed to the root. It IS safe to delete these files if you want.

Actually I didn't have the SQM issue UNTIL I installed 8.1 178 ... I'm downloading the new beta as we speak... i'll see if it does the same crap... it's not even a big deal - i created a batch file to sweep my system & delete them periodically but why is it suddenly happening? sheesh
